Julia Garner is an American actress who came up through independent film and early 2000s prestige TV, becoming an unwitting fashion icon in the process. Born on February 1, 1994 in The Bronx, NY, Garner came from an artistic family: her mother, Tami Gingold, was a successful Israeli comedian before becoming a therapist, while her father, Thomas Garner, was a painter and an art teacher. Her older sister, Anna, is an artist and a writer. She began taking acting lessons at 15 in an effort to overcome her shyness, and before long was appearing in short films for grad students at Columbia. This lead to Garner landing her first feature film role, a supporting part in the thriller "Martha Marcy May Marlene" (2011), about a woman who escapes an abusive cult.

The next year, Garner appeared in three feature films, including her first starring role in the stylish allegorical religious drama "Electrick Children" (2012), as well as supporting roles in the adaptation of the beloved YA classic "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" (2012), and the 60s garage rock coming of age tale "Not Fade Away" (2012), in which her part was written specifically for her by the film's director, "Sopranos" (HBO, 1999-2006) creator David Chase. 2013 proved to be a year of horror for Garner, as she appeared in two spine-tingling films: "We Are What We Are" (2013), a remake of a Mexican horror film about a family of cannibals, and the somewhat oxymoronically titled "The Last Exorcism Part II" (2013).

After appearing alongside Lily Tomlin in the indie sleeper hit "Grandma" (2015), Garner made a move to television, where she would prove to be just as successful: her first role was a recurring part on season 3 of the acclaimed domestic espionage drama "The Americans" (FX, 2013-2018). She soon landed cameos on the penultimate season of Lena Dunham's divisive millennial tale "Girls" (HBO, 2012-2017), and the first season of Baz Luhrmann's 70s-set hip-hop drama "The Get Down" (Netflix, 2016-2017).

Garner got her biggest break yet when she was cast as Ruth Langmore, a young budding criminal, alongside Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, on the acclaimed crime drama "Ozark" (Netflix, 2017-).
