‘Good Girls’ Star Mae Whitman to Lead Hulu Musical Series ‘Up Here’
Mae Whitman, who most recently played Annie Marks on the NBC drama Good Girls, is set to star in the upcoming Hulu musical drama Up Here, from Tick, Tick… Boom! writer Steven Levenson.
According to Deadline, the romantic comedy series is set in New York in 1999 and revolves around the extraordinary story of one ordinary couple, Lindsay (Whitman) and Miguel, as they fall in love. Together, they find that the obstacle in the way of their happiness is themselves and the memories, obsessions, fears, and fantasies that live inside their heads.
Whitman’s Lindsay is described as someone who has spent her whole life trying to live up to others’ expectations of her. But she has had enough of being the good girl and is ready to leave her small-town life in Vermont behind to move to New York City, hoping to discover who she really is and what she really wants.
Up Here is written by Levenson and The Carmichael Show‘s Danielle Sanchez-Witzel, with the Frozen and WandaVision songwriting duo of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez penning original songs. Hamilton director Thomas Kail is on board as director.
Hulu has given the show an eight-episode straight-to-series order, and production is expected to begin this summer in New York. It will be produced by 20th Television and Kail’s Old 320 Sycamore Productions. Levenson, Sanchez-Witzel, Anderson-Lopez, Lopez, and Kail all serve as executive producers alongside Jennifer Todd.
Whitman recently wrapped up a four-season run on the crime comedy-drama Good Girls. She also provides voice roles for the animated series The Owl House, Doug Unplugs, and Invincible. Her previous credits include the Fox sitcom Arrested Development, the NBC drama Parenthood, and Comedy Central’s Drunk History. She also appeared in the 2020 musical comedy film Valley Girl.
