The Skipper’s “little buddy” was everybody’s best friend on Gilligan’s Island, which ran on CBS from 1964-67. Though we never knew if Gilligan was his first or last name, this bumbling innocent — some might say idiot — kept things lively on the tropical island where the passengers and crew of the S.S. Minnow were stranded for three seasons, and syndication eternity. Bob Denver, formerly known as the beatnik Maynard G. Krebs on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, gained sitcom immortality as Gilligan, foiling many a rescue effort with the best of intentions. For all we know, he’s still keeping them laughing in that paradise limbo.
