‘The Challenge’ Sets ‘Battle of the Eras’: Trailer, Cast, and More About Season 40

It’s time for a supersized The Challenge run in Season 40. The milestone season, which is expected to be set in Vietnam, will feature four different “eras” of Challenge veterans, including some of the most prominent OG players and some favorites from the more recent seasons.

MTV has now revealed a slew of crucial details about The Challenge Season 40, including the official cast, premiere date, and some first-look images. Here’s everything to know about The Challenge Season 40.

When will The Challenge Season 40 air?

The Challenge Season 40 will premiere on MTV on Wednesday, August 14 with the show’s largest cast ever.

Before the season premiere, fans will get a sneak peek with a cast introduction special titled The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras: Countdown Begins airing on Wednesday, August 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

Plus, MTV’s Official Challenge Podcast will drop new episodes each Thursday.

Is there a trailer for The Challenge Season 40?

Yes, on July 16, MTV revealed the first trailer for the new season (embedded above), offering fans a glimpse at the cast conflicts and challenges ahead. Not only does it reveal that Hall Brawls are back, but we also learn this season’s twist: Daily challenge winners will choose the targets (presumably for eliminations) from each era. And the challenges look gnarly… particularly one where they’ll have to leap from a skyscraper, it seems.

In the trailer, fans also get a look at some of the hook-ups ahead and at least one major injury: Chris “C.T.” Tamburello is shown being carried away on a stretcher while complaining about his back. Dun dun dun….

What is the theme of The Challenge Season 40?

The official subtitle for The Challenge Season 40 is The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras, which means this season will be about bringing veterans of different “eras” of The Challenge show history together to see who’s the best of all time.

The logline for this season is: “The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras will feature 40 legendary competitors from the series’ 26-year history representing their ‘Challenge Era’ in an epic battle for the ages where legends will collide as they strive to immortalize their names as Challenge 40 Champions and earn their share of the one million dollar prize.”

Another teaser for the season indicates, “In the monumental 40th Season, The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras, the path to glory is far from easy, as they must first compete at the Era Invitational and eliminate the weakest links from within their own Challenge Era for only the best will earn a coveted spot on their team. With relentless, new challenges and twists, these seasoned Veterans are perpetually kept on their toes in the game they thought they had mastered.”

On July 31, host T.J. Lavin appeared on CBS Mornings and revealed a new sneak peek at the season, in which he tells the cast, “to even have a shot at that million dollars, you have to make it through the Era Invitational.” This is a cutthroat elimination to “whittle out the weak links,” he says in the clip.
