40 Years Ago TV Crossword
Everett Collection

1984 was a very good year. The unforgettable TV shows and movies that premiered 40 years ago are all still worth watching. On TV, the laughs showed up with Night Court, The Cosby Show and Charles in Charge. There were even more original dramas: Highway to Heaven with fan favorite Michael Landon, cozy mystery Murder, She Wrote, soap opera Santa Barbara, and the cop show that created and still defines ’80s style: Miami Vice. The movie houses also impressed us, and unlike in the 1980s, when you had to rent VHS tapes to rewatch movies at home, we can now rewatch them when we want on streaming. There was rebellious teen Kevin Bacon in Footloose, baseball savant Robert Redford in The Natural, future cyborg Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator, adventurer Michael Douglas in Romancing the Stone. Comedies were just as memorable, led by Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop, Bill Murray in Ghostbusters, Molly Ringwald in Sixteen Candles, Steve Guttenberg in Police Academy and mermaid Daryl Hannah in Splash.
