Season 14 of MasterChef: Generations is one for the ages. Home cooks classified as Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers compete not only for themselves but to represent their generation.

The road to the $250,000 and title of America’s MasterChef continues on August 14 after a three-week hiatus. Judges Gordon Ramsay, Aarón Sánchez, and Joe Bastianich have their work cut out for them as they continue to narrow down the field.

These competitors have already had to create comfort food based on their childhood and serve up dishes in a timely manner for the people of the Los Angeles FC in BMO Stadium. So far, two Gen Xers Chris Musgrove and Sunshine Carolos joined millennial Si Envytnc Nguyen on the chopping block.

Next up for those remaining generational culinary talents is an exciting bake off challenge. The chefs are tasked with making a celebratory birthday cake. Later, the chefs work in teams to create a dish using a mystery box filled with different food items from their generation.

As seen from the exclusive clip above, the pressure is on for these competitors and they’re definitely feeling it. The clip sees Gen Z doctor Fatima Ayotunde of Queens, New York, falling behind with her hands hurting. She works through the pain to get back to whisking during the bake. “It just takes a lot of energy,” she said. Ramsay’s biggest worry is for Ayotunde, who is making a white cake and covering it with an Italian morang.

The judges analyze her decision to go the hand mixing route rather than a mixer and using a technique only experienced bakers have done. “If you’re not fast enough with the whisk, the sugar hits the bottom and solidifies. She could be in trouble with that.” Bastianich thinks she is in a tailspin and may have bit off more than she could chew. Is this really a deadly blow to Gen Z? We’ll have to watch the episode to find out.
