Stranger Things may not have a Season 5 premiere date yet, but the stars are hard at work putting the final chapter together with Duffer brothers Ross and Matt as production continues. TV Insider caught up with star Joe Keery, who plays fan-favorite Steve Harrington, in June to discuss the actor’s role in FX‘s acclaimed drama Fargo, during which he shared some insider details.

“We’re getting, we’re getting there,” he said of the Netflix hit’s filming progress. At the time, when we asked Keery how far into the Season 5 production process he and the team were, he admitted, “I honestly don’t even really know how far along we are. I’m kind of in the dark in my own way, but it’s been great.”

Since catching up with Keery, Netflix and the official Stranger Things social media accounts shared a behind-the-scenes video teasing the progress, noting that they were officially halfway through. This means that production is closer to being over than it has been as Season 5 filming carries on.

“We’re just cranking along,” Keery added. “It’s been a long time since the show was out and I’m itching like everyone else to see this thing. But it’s been a really fun experience so far and, obviously great to see all my buddies down here. All my friends, all my ST castmates. I love all these guys.”

As fans know, Stranger Things‘ fourth season dropped in two parts during the spring and summer of 2022, meaning it’s been more than two years since new episodes have graced TV screens. The extended absence isn’t for lack of wanting to bring the show to viewers as the show’s production was delayed, like many others, by the months-long writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023.

So, returning to set was surely extra special for Keery and his castmates who had been on hiatus until the strikes did conclude. Getting back to set, “It’s a great excuse for me to get to hang out with these people who have had such an important part in my own life,” Keery gushed. “They’re like family at this point. So I love to see them, love to work with them, and hopefully we can get this thing out soon for people.”
