See How Colbert & Kimmel Reacted to That Walz-Vance Debate (VIDEOS)
Late Night has given its thoughts on Tuesday’s (October 1) Tim Walz and JD Vance debate, and the verdict is “boring.”
Stephen Colbert opened Tuesday’s episode of The Late Show talking about the vice presidential debate, which aired live on CBS at 9 pm ET. In his monologue, Colbert referred to Vance and Walz as “different flavors of dull.”
“JD Vance looked like a business lemur on beta blockers, and Tim Walz was, you know, the old likable coach but appeared to be way over-caffeinated,” the late-night host joked.
Colbert also focused on Vance’s claims that former president Donald Trump “peacefully gave over power on January the 20th, as we have done for 250 years in this country.”
“Yeah, after his coup failed!” Colbert responded. “That’s like a toddler saying, ‘Look, I went to bed peacefully at 8 pm, and I think it’s time we stop focusing on the 45 minutes I spent screaming and biting the babysitter because I wanted more bubbles.'”
When Vance tried to compare January 6 to Hillary Clinton complaining about Russian disinformation on social media, Walz fired back, “January 6 was not Facebook ads.”
“He’s right, it’s not,” Colbert said. “But if it were, it would be ’10 weird tricks to overthrow the will of the people! Mike Pence can’t stand number six!’”
Summing up his thoughts on the debate, Colbert stated, “In the end, it was 90 minutes of constant talk that made one thing clear: Tonight was like having Thanksgiving with your most nervous uncle and your smuggest nephew. It was unpleasant, awkward, and thankfully, you only have to do it once every four years.”
Meanwhile, on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Kimmel noted how the vice presidential candidates showed a “lot of respect” for each other, but this resulted in a “very boring” debate.
“I’ll be honest, I like these better with Trump, I really do,” Kimmel quipped.
The comedian also said he felt “sympathy” for Vance for “having to defend Donald Trump, who he himself openly denounced.” He added, “It’s kind of like being Diddy’s defense attorney.”
Overall, though, Kimmel questioned whether the debate did enough to change anyone’s vote.
“It’s like taking your kids apple picking: about halfway through, you’re like, ‘Okay, you know what, this sounded like it was going to be fun, but what’s the point?’” he joked.
