Heading into the SEAL Team series finale (dropping on Paramount+ on Sunday, October 6), Bravo 1, Jason Hayes (David Boreanaz), has been tasked with an assignment from way above command, separating him from his brothers: to take out traitor Curtis (Mac Brandt). Drew (Beau Knapp), who does his best work in the moral gray area, goes with him.

“As he says to Ray, there’s a reason Jason realizes why they tasked him with this—because command, much like how Jason sees himself, sees him as a killer,” executive producer Spencer Hudnut tells TV Insider. “Also, Curtis is a figure whom [Jason] sees so much of himself in, mostly for worse. And so I think he’s definitely considering the gravity of the situation.”

He continues, “I mean, to take out another American, but also someone whom Jason, I think, recognizes was failed by the same system that failed Swanny [Tony Curran], that’s failed so many of Jason’s other teammates, there’s part of Jason that has a deep understanding of Curtis and that I think would be very conflicted about being the person to take out someone who honestly was left behind.”

But does Jason feel like he truly can take out Curtis? That’s the question.

“I think Jason feels like he’s the one who should do it,” says Hudnut. “I think he’s the one who has so much blood on his hands that, what’s just another kill for him? And again, I think command—I mean the decision actually to take Curtis out comes from above command, but the fact that Jason is the one being tasked with this, I think for Jason almost validates the way he’s seeing himself.”

Looking at how the series in general wraps after seven seasons (and two homes, CBS, then the move to streaming), the finale’s title, “The Last Word,” is appropriate.

“So much of this season is about, does war have the last word? That’s in Ray’s [Neil Brown Jr.] head, it’s in Jason’s head, clearly. I think they’re all struggling with what comes next,” Hudnut explains. “We’ve created a team where everyone’s most at home on the battlefield. And so will they have the opportunity to try to feel at home away from the battlefield and can they achieve that is a big question for all of them.”
