The latest episode of The Great British Baking Show, which premiered on Netflix October 4, was an emotional affair as contestant Nelly opened up about her personal life during a heartfelt baking tribute.

Tasked with making an edible puppet theater out of biscuits, Nelly, a 44-year-old palliative care assistant from Dorset, England, constructed a tribute to her “five unborn children.” While making her theater, Nelly opened up about her “painful” experience with five pregnancy losses.

“These stars represent my five unborn children,” she said while making five star-shaped cookies. “This was twins… And they belong there.”

“Even if you don’t birth them, you carry them in you all your life; you’ve got the genes in, so I can’t miss them on my show, can I?” she added before explaining the story of her piece.

“You’re going in your life through so many obstacles and the forest represents all these horrible obstacles which we have to do in our life,” she explained. “And it’s dark and it’s painful, but in every tunnel, in every forest, is a light. Maybe small, teeny weeny, but it will get there. And then there’s going to be a big one.”

Taking the star cookies, Nelly added, “So they’re going to hang above… just like they are,” referring to her unborn children.

The official Great British Bake-Off Instagram page shared a video of Nelly’s piece, captioning the post, “Thank you so much for sharing such a personal and important story, Nelly. If you’ve been affected by the issues discussed and would like some more support, please see the link in bio.”

Fans flooded the comments section with praise and respect for Nelly for being brave enough to share her story.

“This was so brave and amazing to tell so openly. I’m sure it will get to the right ears,” wrote one fan.

“She explained it beautifully. In every forest, there is always a glimmer of light!!!” said another.

“You can see that she found that hard to say. Thank you, Nelly. I have two stars, and even though I hold them in my heart, I don’t always feel that others would count them. They belong,” another added.

Another wrote, “What a wonderful person and the most beautiful and brave of messages.”

“I was so not ready to be fully weeping right now, but just so grateful to her for sharing her story. I’m 34 weeks pregnant after having a miscarriage in January. There is always a light!” said one commenter.

According to the show’s official bio, Nelly is a “devoted mum to two young boys, who, with her husband Farhan, are the biggest fans of her bakes.”
