Sam Champion has updated fans on his ongoing battle with skin cancer, posting unflinching selfies and details from what appeared to be a tiring day of surgery that left him “a little overwhelmed.”

The beloved Good Morning America weatherman shared a series of posts on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday, October 2 from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

“First pass of the knife with Mohs surgery today! Now we wait for results,” Champion, 63, captioned the first X selfie which showed him smiling in front of hospital equipment with a bandage under his eye.

“Proud of you dear friend for taking care of yourself…and for making your mess your message for others!” Robin Roberts gushed in the comments. “Heeey! I have a wonderful nurse who saw u at the Liberty game last night!!” Champion sweetly replied.

According to The Mayo Clinic: “Mohs surgery is a procedure used to treat skin cancer. This surgery involves cutting away thin layers of skin. Each thin layer is looked at closely for signs of cancer. The process keeps going until there are no signs of cancer.”

However, the TV star wasn’t out of the woods yet as he required another round of surgery to ensure he was cancer-free. He shared a second selfie on X, in which he was frowning. It was captioned: “2nd pass coming. -sigh-.”

Around 12 hours after the initial post, Champion shared a third and final X update at 10 p.m. on Wednesday of a graphic close-up image of stitches underneath his eye — and some good news.

“Final final. We got it all!” he rejoiced. “Thanks to a hard working group of very kind DRs and Nurses! Keep a close eye on your skin… No one knows it better than you… And when you see something you don’t like, make sure you talk to your doctor.”

Champion has battled skin cancer for decades and received his first diagnosis in his mid-20s. Ever since then, he’s had multiple surgeries to remove suspicious moles. In May 2010, he underwent live-on-air surgery on GMA. He’s blamed his skin cancer on bad suntanning advice he got growing up.

In July, Champion posted a photo of himself with a circular bandage under his eye. He opened up in the caption: “For about 30 years now, I’ve been reminding you guys to regularly have a doctor examine the places on your skin that just don’t look right! I’ve had dozens of skin cancer removed, most simple basal cell… Today a biopsy on this one under my eye!”

On Thursday, October 3, Champion further clarified on Instagram Stories that this: “was a spot that I had been watching because I noticed. Always keep an eye on your own skin,” he added — and said that he’s “physically doing great. I started to swell a little bit after the surgery but it’s not as swollen today.”

“Mentally, yesterday was a rough day,” Champion reflected. “I gotta say, I just felt a little overwhelmed on the second pass, but I think that’s natural and normal.”

He also said he’s now much more “careful” with the sun.
