Film and TV icon Alan Alda turned 89 on January 28, 2025. But despite a career that began in the early 1960s and continued to a 2022 role on Ray Donovan, with an Oscar-nominated turn in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator along the way, to many of us, Alda will always be best known as Hawkeye, the wise-cracking surgeon at the heart of M*A*S*H.

Adapted from a 1970 film, M*A*S*H was nominated for more than 100 Emmy Awards over its 11 year run, winning 14 (including two Best Actor awards for Alda). The finale, broadcast on Feb. 28, 1983, was the most-watched and highest-rated single television episode in TV history at the time, with a record-breaking 121.6 million viewers.
