‘The White Lotus’: Natasha Rothwell on Surprise Reunion — 3 Theories About Greg’s Shocking Return
[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for The White Lotus Season 3 Episode 1.]
The White Lotus is back along with more than one familiar face as the Season 3 premiere unveiled Belinda’s (Natasha Rothwell) previously announced return alongside the resurfacing of none other than Jon Gries‘ Greg, a.k.a. Tanya’s (Jennifer Coolidge) murder-plotting husband from Seasons 1 and 2.
Upon learning of Gries’ return, Rothwell tells TV Insider, “It was just the longest hug. I just love him so much.” When it came to Belinda’s story arc, Rothwell didn’t know much, but upon reading Season 3’s scripts, she discovered that Gries would also be back for a new Thailand-based adventure.

“I said yes to the show before reading scripts, so I had no idea. And my character was announced before I got the scripts and then finally, I got the scripts and I realized he was gonna be there and I texted him. I was like, ‘Holy s**t, man!'” Rothwell recalls. “So to see him on set… When you’re around good people who are great at what they do, it’s just inspiring and iron sharpens iron, and so, I love being across from someone who’s that dedicated to their craft as I am.”

HBO
As viewers saw in the premiere episode, Belinda is visiting the titular resort’s Thailand location for a special wellness exchange program, in hopes of picking up new tips and tricks to bring back to the Hawaii-based location she works out of, and has yet to actually cross paths with Greg (if she will at all). But what prompts his return? In a scene toward the end of the episode, Aimee Lou Wood‘s Chelsea, a guest, sits at the bar alone where she meets another young woman, played by Charlotte Le Bon.
When Chelsea asks if the woman is a guest, too, she reveals that she and her boyfriend only visit to get food and drinks and reside in a house at the top of the hill and have for the past year. She points the man out to Chelsea, and the camera pans over to reveal Greg, the man Tanya had met in Hawaii and had married by the time Season 2 debuted.
But as viewers will recall, he had a role in the plot to murder her as pictures revealed connections to the expats who attempted to kill her aboard their yacht. Memorably, their plan backfired and Tanya ended up shooting them, but her attempt to jump off the boat had deadly consequences when she hit her head and drowned.
So, what role will Greg play in Season 3? We’re already spiraling over potential theories. Below, we’re breaking down three potential directions for his character’s story in Season 3, but stay tuned to see how his resurfacing will unfold as Season 3 continues on HBO and Max.
Greg’s Going to Get Caught
If there’s anything this show could do to console us over the loss of Tanya, it would be to serve justice following her untimely death. The only way to serve justice is if Greg is finally held responsible for his role in her demise. Clearly a con man, Greg’s gallivanting has to catch up with him sooner rather than later, right? At least we can hope.
Greg’s Appearance Is a Coincidence
As mentioned by Le Bon’s character, she and Greg have been living in Thailand for a year, so perhaps his appearance is merely a coincidence as he lives under the radar following Tanya’s death. After all, Tanya’s demise likely made way for a major windfall as we know she had quite a hefty inheritance.
Greg’s Seeking to Eliminate Others
In a more insidious theory, perhaps Greg is even more calculated than we thought and he’s got a new target in sight. We know his current girlfriend has squabbles with him as she laments over Greg’s behavior at the bar with Chelsea. Could this new girl be in his crosshairs, or could he have other targets in mind?
While we ponder the theories, the stars of The White Lotus weigh in on why anyone would want to murder their characters this season in the video, above. Check it out, and let us know your Greg theories in the comments section, below.
