A New ‘Carrie,’ School Daze at ‘Abbott,’ Return to Chicago, Apple TV Finales (‘Last Seen,’ ‘Ted Lasso’)
Summer H. Howell is the latest Carrie in Mike Flanagan‘s modern-day twist on the Stephen King classic. Abbott Elementary returns with changes afoot at the Philly elementary school. NBC‘s Chicago triumvirate (Med, Fire, P.D.) is back for a new season. Apple TV wraps the emotional thriller Last Seen and brings Ted Lasso to a close.

Carrie
If you thought the shower scene in Carrie (in any version) was rough, wait until you see it amplified on social media. Mike Flanagan’s up-to-the-minute remake of the Stephen King classic that put the horrormeister on the map thrusts the once-sheltered, overwhelmed, and bullied title character (sensitively played by Summer H. Howell) into a modern high-school setting of toxic meme sites and alarming active-shooter lockdown drills. Flanagan regular Samantha Sloyan co-stars as Carrie’s militantly pious mother, Margaret White, losing control of her psychically superpowered daughter as the eight-part series (which is being conceived as a trilogy) builds to the climactic prom-pocalypse. Abbott Elementary
The Emmy-winning comedy brings change to the Philadelphia teachers for Season 6, with Gregory (Tyler James Williams) promoted to Assistant Principal and figuring out what it means to work alongside the ever-unpredictable Ava (Janelle James). Elsewhere, Janine (Quinta Brunson) causes a stir with her “ultimate classroom makeover,” while Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) butts heads with a new second-grade teacher (Katy Mixon Greer) who’s moved into her old classroom.

Chicago Med
We’re back in the hospital, the firehouse and the precinct as the popular Dick Wolf procedurals return for new seasons. On Chicago Med, Season 12 opens with Gaffney administrator Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) fighting for her job while the E.D. copes with the fallout from gunfire at a wedding, and Dr. Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram) debates returning to the grind after her maternity leave. Followed by Chicago Fire (9/8c), which welcomes a group of new probies to Firehouse 51 in Season 15 after a time jump reveals who survived the cliffhanger fire. Prepare to say goodbye to ex-battalion chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney). The night ends with the Season 14 premiere of Chicago P.D. (10/9c), where Voight (Jason Beghe) reluctantly brings an outsider into the Intelligence fold after the shooting of a parole officer, and Officer Eva Amani (Arienne Mandi) faces a critical turning point with her long-missing sister.

Last Seen
An anguished and wounded Ian (Patrick Brammall) pursues the man who abducted his daughter 11 years ago in the Australian thriller’s emotionally wrenching finale. Born as Maggie but raised as Sarah (Chloe Jean Lourdes), the confused girl caught in the middle of this tragic situation doesn’t know who to trust or which way to turn when her “dad” Henry (Brendan Cowell) takes refuge in his father’s cult compound. Also ending: the fourth season of Ted Lasso (not available for preview), with the AFC Richmond women’s team celebrating their promotion while grieving the loss of their ardent fan and pub proprietor, Mae (Annette Badland).

Small Prophets
As quietly eccentric as it is droll, this acclaimed British comedy from writer-director Mackenzie Crook (Detectorists) stars Pearce Quigley as Michael Sleep, a melancholy loner who gets his jollies confounding customers at the Home Depot-like store where he loafs under the gaze of his annoying boss, Gordon (Crook). Alone at home, behind an overgrown garden that’s the bane of his nosy neighbor (Jon Pointing), Michael grieves for his soulmate Clea, who left him without a trace seven years ago. When his retiree father (Monty Python alum Michael Palin) turns Michael on to the magical notion of creating tiny homunculi through alchemy, in hopes that their prophecies will reveal the truth about Clea’s vanishing act, our hero gets to work in his shed, with surreal results. The series opens with two episodes.
