What’s Worth Watching: Cristela Looks Through Roseanne-Colored Glasses

Cristela, “Marriage, Counselor” (Friday, Feb. 20, 8:30/7:30c, ABC)

Cristela (Cristela Alonzo) is a pot-stirrer. So is Roseanne Barr’s Veronica, Trent’s (Sam McMurray) soon-to-be ex-wife and the attorney who made ambitious Cristela a job offer she almost couldn’t refuse in the January 9 episode. The two have stayed sharp-tongued friends, though, so Trent uses Cristela as a Trojan horse to get Veronica to sign a retroactive pre-nup.

Barr’s done her share of guest spots the last few years—including voicing Kraang Prime on the resurrected Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series?!—but Veronica is a great use of the actress/comedian’s innate spikiness and ability to allow some vulnerability to poke through.
