Documentarian Liz Garbus is good with troubled talents. There was Marilyn Monroe in Love, Marilyn and Bobby Fischer in Bobby Fischer Against the World. Now she’s focused her steady lens on late musician Nina Simone. As talented as Marilyn, as brilliant as Bobby, and more complicated than both, Simone is inspiring, frustrating, and consistently compelling. And, oh, that voice: To quote the singer, herself, “Sometimes I sound like gravel and sometimes I sound like coffee and cream.”
