Creating (Edible) Brains for ‘iZombie’
When Liv must satisfy her craving for brains, iZombie prop master Aleya Naiman steps up as the culinary queen of cooking cerebellum. Over the course of Season 1, Naiman produced about 35 faux brains. “It’s roughly a 12-hour turnaround per brain, and the consistency is much like Jell-O,” she says.
The brains are made out of a clear agar gelatin with a coconut almond flavor and cast in a brain-shaped mold made out of dental alginate (putty). “It’s not the most glorious taste, but it’s fine,” says Naiman, who singles out the “brain carpaccio” from the Meat Cute restaurant as her favorite creation of the season. “We made a brain that was quite tough and dense,” she says with a laugh. “It looked like a big hunk of ham being sliced into beautiful thin wafers.” Bon appétit!
