What’s Worth Watching: Jonathan Strange Love

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, “How is Lady Pole?” (Saturday, June 20, 10/9c, BBC America)

Last week’s Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell premiere was mostly about the latter (Eddie Marsan) and his charming grumpiness. But tonight’s episode belongs to Norrell’s soon-to-be apprentice, former idler Jonathan Strange (Bertie Carvel). Discovering his true purpose in life—bringing practical magic back to England—was like a B5 shot in Jonathan’s behind. Newly invigorated, he approaches learning the dark arts with a giddy passion that makes even Norrell smile. It’s intoxicating—and might make you feel guilty about not tackling those unwrapped Rosetta Stone DVDs with more enthusiasm.
