‘This Is Us’ Star Chrissy Metz on Season 2 and Her Bravest Moment in the Series
Last fall, fans and critics alike fell in love with NBC’s breakout hit This Is Us, which introduced the lovably complicated Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca Pearson (Mandy Moore) and their “Big Three.” The smash NBC series returns on Sept. 26, continuing the family’s adventures at watershed moments in their lives as they occur across multiple timelines.
In the Season 1 finale, the modern-day storyline left Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and his wife contemplating adoption, Kevin (Justin Hartley) starting production on a major motion picture and Kate (Chrissy Metz) deciding to pursue a career as a singer. For this timeline, Season 2 will pick up a few months later, on the trio’s 37th birthday.
TV Insider caught up with Metz at the Television Critics Association’s Summer Press Tour, where the actress teased, “Kate’s pursuing her musical endeavors, and that’s wonderful and great, but being a late 30’s unconventional woman in L.A. is hard enough, and to pursue music is, like, what?! So, it’s not always going to be rainbows and unicorns and like life, there are some curveballs. But it’s really not about what happens to you, but how you react to it.”
Metz also gave a sneak peek into Kate’s relationship with Toby (Chris Sullivan), revealing, “They’ve been together essentially a year now—and they’re engaged—and who knows when and if a wedding is going to be happening this season! I don’t know. But, they’ve moved in together, and that brings a whole slew of new dynamics because you can lose friends living with them.”
The actress also calls her Emmy nomination “surreal” and shares that her bravest moment from Season 1 was when her character stepped on a scale in the series pilot.
Metz revealed that she shot that scene on her very first day. While shooting, she was asked, “Do you feel comfortable in underwear?” and “How about taking off your bra?” and Metz says, “I think it was so important for the character.”

Another scene that Metz points to as being integral to her character was Kate and Toby’s break-up scene in the Thanksgiving episode. Metz says, “Here’s a man that loves her deeply, but she’s willing to put herself first—and that was challenging. I think it spoke volumes for people, and for women, and for Kate. That was hard, because I’m learning as a person, to put myself first; and we all have to do that…You can’t give from an empty well.”
