NBC Orders Adam Levine Reality Pilot Based on Maroon 5’s “Sugar” Video

Rock star and The Voice judge Adam Levine is turning the music video to Maroon 5’s hit “Sugar” into a TV show.

NBC  has greenlit a one-hour pilot from Levine, director David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers) and reality producers Renegade 83 (Naked and Afraid) that is based on the concept behind the “Sugar” video.

In the untitled project, unsuspecting fans will be surprised by the sudden appearance by big stars, who will randomly show up at a milestone event. Among the ideas already floated: A couple about to get married discovers that a famous recording artist is leading the house band, or a top actor shows up at someone’s bachelorette party.

Essentially a twist on the classic hidden camera genre, the show would rely on a team of improv actors to help create the element of surprise. Levine’s 222 Productions is producing along with Renegade 83; Levine, Jordan Feldstein (Levine’s manager and producing partner) and Josh Gummersall will executive produce, along with David Garfinkle and Jay Renfroe.

Dobkin, who directed the Maroon 5 music video, will also executive produce, while Megan Dobkin is a producer.

Levine had been credited as an executive producer on NBC’s now-scrapped The 1970s limited event series. Last year NBC developed a comedy project inspired by Levine’s teenage years.

The “Sugar” video has been seen online nearly a billion times. Inspired in part by Dobkin’s Wedding Crashers, the video follows Levine and the rest of Maroon 5 as they travel around Los Angeles in December 2014 to perform a surprise song at various weddings around town. Here’s the video:
