ABC is in the early stages of developing a black-ish prequel series, which will focus on a young Bow.

The current matriarch of the Johnson family, Dr. Rainbow “Bow” Johnson, is played by Tracee Ellis Ross, but fans will be introduced to a teenage Bow in an upcoming episode of black-ish. The episode could also serve as a “backdoor pilot” for the spinoff, according to Deadline.

The flashback episode will air in March and is reportedly going to be written by black-ish co-executive producer Peter Saji. It will be set in the 1980s through ’90s and it will show Bow growing up.

This wouldn’t be the first spinoff series born from the ABC comedy series — grown-ish, which follows Yara Shahidi’s character Zoey in college, premiered in 2018 on Freeform. It was renewed for a third season in early February.

Creator Kenya Barris will likely serve as an executive producer but wouldn’t be as involved in day-to-day operations as he just signed a new overall production deal with Netflix.
