What’s Worth Watching: a ‘Real O’Neals’ Prom, ‘The Night Manager’s Conclusion and More for Tuesday, May 24
The Real O’Neals (8:30/7:30c, ABC): For newly “out” student Kenny (Noah Galvin), finding a prom date presents special challenges in the season finale of the midseason’s freshest family sitcom. While he and brother Jimmy (Matt Shively) seek just the right partners, cynical sister Shannon (the very funny Bebe Wood) considers the entire affair a sham, even though she’s been asked.
The Night Manager (10/9c, AMC): The suspenseful miniseries adaptation of John le Carré’s novel of espionage and betrayal comes full circle when Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston) returns to Cairo, this time in the company of the notorious Roper (Hugh Laurie), and just about everyone is in danger of exposure in a treacherous caper of sexual and financial intrigue.
Person of Interest (9/8c and 10/9c, CBS): Wow, the network really is burning off this exceptionally twisty cyber-thriller as quickly as it can, with back-to-back episodes. In the first, Root (Amy Acker) goes undercover with a radio conspiracy theorist who may be getting too close to Samaritan’s truth. In the second, Shaw (Sarah Shahi) is still having trouble separating fantasy from reality, while Reese (Jim Caviezel) and Finch (Michael Emerson) are trapped in a hospital during a viral outbreak, a scenario that will almost surely be more exciting than The CW’s dead-show-walking, Containment.
Inside Tuesday TV: The CW’s The Flash (8/7c) ends its second season with what we hope is Barry’s (Grant Gustin) final showdown with Zoom (Teddy Sears), who still sounds more like a children’s show than a super-10/villain. … Dr. Ken’s Ken Jeong shows up on the season finale of ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat (8/7c) as Louis’s (Randall Park) estranged brother, who’s got a bombshell to share with the family. … Winners will be crowned on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars (9/8c) and NBC’s The Voice (9/8c). Pitbull and Aloe Blacc are among Dancing’s guest performers, while Blake Shelton, Little Big Town, Ariana Grande and Sia are among the headliners doing their damnedest to upstage whoever wins The Voice. … In a collaboration with NPR, PBS’s Frontline investigates the Business of Disaster (10/9c, check local listings at pbs.org), focusing on insurance companies that profited in the wake of Hurricane Sandy while thousands of storm victims have yet to be able to return home. … In a particularly topical segment on HBO’s Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel (10/9c), correspondent David Scott explores how gun companies have marketed the semi-automatic AR-15 from a combat weapon into the “modern sporting rifle” that has sold an estimated 12 million units to civilians.
