Emmys 2016: It’s Another Comedy Win for HBO’s ‘Veep’

For the second year in a row, HBO’s Veep took home the Outstanding Comedy Series award, as well as a fifth straight Lead Actress in a Comedy Series statue for star Julia Louis-Dreyfus for her role of Selina Meyer.

Executive producer David Mandel said of the win, “It’s unbelievably amazing. This is an amazing group of actors who, when I met them a year and a half ago, did an incredible job of acting like they thought it was great that I was coming to run the show…it’s been an incredible ride.”

With an outlandish presidential campaign happening in the real world, Mandel expressed his gratitude that Louis-Dreyfus’s Meyer is now an ex-President of the United States on the series. “There are days when things we think of pale in comparison to that mad man threatening Hillary Clinton not once but twice,” he said. “If I wrote that, I’d get fired by HBO. I find the level of discourse in this campaign to be horrific.”

Asked if the real life drama with the campaign makes his job writing a comedy series easier or harder, Mandel replied, “It makes comedy way tougher. It’s just so hard and I think there are a lot of people who don’t want to laugh at this stuff,” he said. “It’s been a crazy year of of politics.”

Regarding the real election, Mandel had simple advice: “I would simple say vote. Vote for one of the actual candidates of the two parties and let’s make sure we avoid some white supremacists. It’s not that hard.”
