The best thing about it being October is almost everything: pumpkin-flavored foods, hay rides, s’mores around a campfire, a crisp gust of wind that gives you chills, and the exciting build-up to Halloween. What’s not to love about this month? Wearing a chunky sweater to enjoy the crisp cold breeze may bring on some feelings of nostalgia, though, and if that happens, we’re here to help.

Fall-friendly cartoons in particular give TV fans an excuse to bundle up and snuggle in their beds to relive a childhood fancy. Whether it’s solving mysteries with the iconic group of friends in Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporatedfighting crime in the darkness of your room with Batman: The Animated Seriesor just cracking up at the quirky mystical creatures in Disenchantment, these shows allow us to feel cozier than ever this time of year.

If you’re looking for a show to watch while baking chocolate chip cookies, carving pumpkins, or just lounging around on a grey windy day, here are eight cartoons worth watching this October.

Over the Garden Wall

When Wirt (Elijah Wood) and his little brother Gregory (Collin Dean) realize they’re lost in a mysterious forest called “The Unknown” things get outlandish. Over the Garden Wall is one of the best shows to watch in October. Not only does it play into the aesthetic of fall with colorful leaves, tailored trousers, and an old-time jazz soundtrack — but the show fits the aesthetic of Halloween with spooky characters and encounters, such as a town of skeletons that wear pumpkins to celebrate the season of autumn.

Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated

This modernized take of the Scooby-Doo franchise is the most compelling and arguably the best. The series starts off with Scooby (Frank Welker) and the gang Velma (Mindy Cohn), Shaggy (Matthew Lillard), Daphne (Grey DeLisle), and Fred (Frank Welker), up to their usual routine of solving mysteries and fighting monsters. However, Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated gives a nostalgic, small-town horror movie vibe. The characters have depth and each episode connects with a creepy, overarching plot that nobody would have expected.

Gravity Falls

Twins Mabel (Kristen Schaal) and Dipper (Jason Ritter) are sent to spend the summer with their great-uncle known as Grunkle Stan (Alex Hirsch) in Gravity Falls, a town filled with supernatural beings and occurrences. In Gravity Falls no one can be trusted. The mysterious and humorous plot are all what make the series worthwhile in this town surrounded by forest. Between the quirky humor displayed by Mable, the con-artist Grunkle Stan, and the tourist festivities that come out of the “Mystery Shack,” the show is a must watch.

Batman: The Animated Series

During the fall, you might notice bats flying around outside at night. These nocturnal animals tend stay out from dusk to dawn. So does the well beloved, crime-fighting superhero Batman. Batman: The Animated Series is another show arguably the best of its franchise. Although it’s a cartoon, the plot possesses adult-like qualities enjoyable for all ages. Viewers are immersed in an in-depth exploration of Batman’s (Kevin Conray) lore as he comes face to face with iconic villains voiced by a stacked cast one being Mark Hamill as the Joker.

Danny Phantom

After a lab accident, Danny Fenton (David Kaufman) is half fourteen-year old boy and half ghost in the Nickelodeon action series Danny Phantom. Danny decides to make use of his powers and creates the superhero persona Danny Phantom to fight ghosts and mutated animals terrorizing his hometown. This is an entertaining series that perfectly embodies the aesthetic of fall with it’s back-to-school elements — along with it’s Halloween aesthetic that depicts almost everything ghost themed. Not to mention his parents are well-esteemed ghost hunters, the show is a must watch this October.
