Why We Can’t Wait for Donald Glover & Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s New Amazon Series
The brilliant minds of Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge are joining forces for a new take on the 2005 film Mr. and Mrs. Smith coming to Amazon Prime Video in 2022. We don’t know much other than they’ll star in and executive produce this series.
It was also recently announced that Glover left his previous home of FX for an eight-figure deal with Amazon. It’s rumored that this deal will consist of a content channel dedicated to spotlighting Glover’s work alongside other Prime Video content. Needless to say, Glover’s making some big TV moves, and we can’t wait to see them on our screens.

Before his time as Troy on NBC’s Community, Glover was a writer for the hilarious NBC sitcom 30 Rock, a feat in its own right considering that he was still a college student at New York University when he landed the gig. His impressive spec scripts for sitcoms such as The Simpsons and Everybody Hates Chris resulted in a job writing for one of the most lauded TV sitcoms in history. Truly an inspiration to young writers everywhere!
Mega Musical Moniker
Glover’s masterful talents don’t end at television writing and acting: He’s been donning the musical alter ego of Childish Gambino since 2008. Initially creating online mixtapes, Glover’s success as Childish Gambino now spans four studio albums and five Grammy awards. His music combines elements of rap, funk, and psychedelic genres with witty writing to boot. With all of this talent, it’s safe to assume that Glover has the Midas touch.
A Master With the Pen
The brilliance that is Fleabag is certainly no secret — for great reason. Waller-Bridge created, wrote, acted, and served as executive producer on the two-season series which has come to both steal and break hearts worldwide. Her quick wit and intensely personal writing style created a poignant story that opened the world’s hearts to Fleabag’s tumultuous life over the course of only two seasons. Her mastermind can also be accredited to the hit series Killing Eve, once again as a creator, writer, and executive producer. It seems like Waller-Bridge may just possess the Midas touch as well.
To the Big Screen!
Off of her recent success and accolades surrounding Fleabag, Waller-Bridge is one of the writers of the upcoming James Bond film, No Time to Die, and her attachment to the film could mean a breath of fresh air for the direction of the series. It’s no doubt that her gripping writing and sharp wit will make their way into this story.
Creative Geniuses
All it takes is a glance at the impressive careers of both Glover and Waller-Bridge to affirm that together they will create a series that is nothing short of creative genius. From Glover’s critically acclaimed FX series Atlanta to the aforementioned Fleabag, there’s no doubt that these two are masters of scripted television. The thematic content of their projects tends to differ, but their creative work can be linked by elevated wit and dry humor. That culminates in a both mysterious and exciting creative match.
Award-Winning Super Stars
Nothing says success like a shiny gold trophy, something which Glover and Waller-Bridge are well accustomed to at this point in their careers. Waller-Bridge has received three Emmys and two Golden Globe awards for her work on Fleabag. Glover has racked up two Emmys and two Golden Globes for Atlanta, along with five Writers Guild of America awards for his work on 30 Rock. Come on, this pairing just practically screams awards season buzz!
An Intergalactic Connection
However, this is not the first time that the two are working together — they both starred in the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story. Glover played famed character Lando Calrissian, with Waller-Bridge appearing alongside him as his quirky droid companion L3-37 (above). In 2019, Glover presented Waller-Bridge with the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year, with a humorous speech attesting to her incredible work as a screenwriter, but also their bond as friends. This friendship of cosmic and creative proportions is bound to yield spectacular results with their new project.
