Mysterious Forces

Love shows with sci-fi, supernatural and fantasy elements? From possible aliens to angels and demons to elves, these nine brand-new shows have out-of-this-world characters and stories in spades. See what sets these shows apart and when they premiere in January.
Shannara Chronicles - Wil (Austin Butler), Amberle (Poppy Drayton), Eretria (Ivana Baquero)
MTV

The Shannara Chronicles

Sci-Fi Element: Set in the future, in a world that intertwines magic and modern tech, there are also plenty of elves, demons and other fantasy creatures populating the earth. (And with the show filmed in New Zealand, expect plenty of Lord of the Rings déjà vu.)

Premieres: Tuesday, Jan. 5, 10/9c, MTV

Rob Kazinsky in Second Chance
FOX

Second Chance

Sci-Fi Element: Scientist siblings bring a 75-year-old policeman back to life…as his thirtysomething younger self (Rob Kazinsky). The show’s original name was The Frankenstein Code, so shades of sci-fi are still part of the show, even if it’s focused on a man getting, well, a second chance at life.

Premieres: Wednesday, Jan. 13, 9/8c, FOX

Colony

Sci-Fi Element: Los Angeles is occupied by mysterious forces that may or may not be alien in origin. But with Lost's executive producer Carlton Cuse at the helm, expect some sci-fi and supernatural elements.

Premieres: Thursday, Jan. 14, 10/9c, USA

DC's Legends of Tomorrow
Jeff Weddell/The CW

DC's Legends of Tomorrow

Sci-Fi Element: A team of eight heroes and rogues (first introduced in The Flash and Arrow) must travel through time to stop an immortal villain from taking over the world. Their leader? Future time traveler Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill).

Premieres: Tuesday, Jan. 21, 8/7c, The CW

X-Files Mulder and Scully in New Season
FOX

The X-Files

Sci-Fi Element: With a show like The X-Files, there will be plenty of hard-to-explain (and supernatural) mysteries, and the six-episode revival with Agents Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Mulder (David Duchovny) will certainly be no different.

Premieres: Sunday, Jan. 24, 10/9c, FOX (after the NFC Championship)

The Magicians - Season 1
Lorenzo Agius/Syfy

The Magicians

Supernatural Element: Think a grown-up and sexier version of Harry Potter. A group of magically-inclined students enroll at Brakebills University to refine their abilities, but one rejected student (Stella Maeve) strikes out on her own to pursue a darker path.

Premieres: Monday, Jan. 25, 9/8c, Syfy

Lucifer
John P. Fleenor/FOX

Lucifer

Supernatural Element: The Lord of Hell (Tom Ellis) literally walks the earth when he takes up residence in the City of Angels (ah, the irony). Fellow demon Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) runs a club bar while Lucifer's angelic brother Amandiel (D.B. Woodside) pops up once in a while to demand his return to Hell.

Premieres: Monday, Jan. 25, 9/8c, FOX
