The Resident‘s third season is ending sooner than expected due to the coronavirus pandemic, but it looks like fans are going to get to learn even more about Cain (Morris Chestnut) before it does.
Following the penultimate episode, which had Cain reveal a major mistake from his time as an intern, we’re going to meet one of his former girlfriends when she’s admitted to the hospital for surgery. But as the promo for the April 7 finale reveals, those feelings may not be entirely in the past. “Few people have meant more,” he admits.
“Is he such a loyalist to Red Rock that he will always remain blind to some of the ways in which they do business? Or, not unlike the evolution of Bell, is this a man that can evolve?” showrunner Todd Harthan asked about Cain after the fall finale. “That’s what we’re playing with really from the moment we get back after the break up through our final batch of episodes and on to the season finale.” We’ll have to see what this change in production means for that.
How will things go terribly, terribly wrong in this episode? Unfortunately, there are several possibilities. In “Burn It All Down,” Derek’s condition seems to be improving, only for a severe complication to arise. Is he the latest victim of Cain’s cover-up? That’s Kit’s (Jane Leeves) fear, and considering Derek has the dreaded vent with the unicorn on it — it belonged to Dawn, who Cain learned had Candida auris too late to stop the deadly fungus from beginning to spread, killing her EMT — she’s probably right.
Elsewhere in the episode, Conrad (Matt Czuchry) fills Marshall (Glenn Morshower) in on the emergency situation facing the hospital, and Mina (Shaunette Renée Wilson) and AJ (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) work on saving the heart of a salsa dancer.
Czuchry did previously tease that the lingering threads surrounding Red Rock would be “coming to a head [and] a conclusion” in Episodes 19-23. But again, we’ll have to see where Episode 20, right in the middle of that grouping, leaves things.
