Beyond the Emmys & the Globes: 9 Other TV Award Shows to Know
Environmental Media Awards
Billed as the “green standard for the entertainment industry,” these trophies are presented by the Environmental Media Association and honor films and TV shows that “increase public awareness of environmental issues and inspire personal action.” Nominees this year include One Strange Rock, VICE, and Full Frontal With Samantha Bee.
GLAAD Media Awards
GLAAD honors the best and most authentic depiction of LGBTQ lives with these annual awards, some of which went to Vida, Steven Universe, and Vida this year.
Gracie Awards
Every year, the Alliance for Women in Media hand out trophies to “exemplary programming created by women, for women and about women.” 2019’s honorees included Escape at Dannemora, Killing Eve, and Mom.
Humanitas Awards
Humanitas describes itself as a nonprofit that “honors and empowers film and television writers whose work explores the human condition in a nuanced, meaningful way which brings the global community closer.” This year, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Dear White People, and God Friended Me took home the prize.
Imagen Awards
The Imagen Foundation “encourage[s] the positive portrayals of Latinos in all forms of the entertainment media,” and in 2018, Station 19 and One Day at a Time won the Best Primetime Program categories.
NAACP Image Awards
Power, Black-ish, and Doc McStuffins were three of the TV shows celebrated this year at this annual award show, in which the NAACP honors representations of people in color in the media.
Peabody Awards
These awards — based out of the University of George’s Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication — recognizes “socially conscious storytelling” every year. This year’s TV nominees include Blue Planet II, Hannah Gadsby: Nanette, Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj, and Pose.
ReFrame Stamp for Television
This designation is awarded to TV programs that “hire female-identifying people in four out of eight key areas of their production, including: writer, director, producer, lead, co-lead, speaking parts, department heads and crew.” For the 2017-2018 season, that stamp of approval went to shows including Grey’s Anatomy, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Broad City, and GLOW.
Saturn Awards
The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films presents these honor to the best of each year’s genre fiction. Last year’s winners included The Flash, The Orville, Twin Peaks, and Star Trek: Discovery.
The Emmys get TV buffs on the edge of their sofas every September, and the Golden Globes do so every January, but tons of TV awards are doled out in the intervening months.
The Alliance for Women in Media just announced the winners of the 2019 Gracie Awards, for example, including Killing Eve’s Sandra Oh, Escape at Dannemora’s Patricia Arquette, and The Affair’s Maura Tierney.
