‘New Amsterdam,’ ‘9-1-1’ & More Couples We’re Worried About Heading Into Next Season

New Amsterdam This Is Us 9-1-1 Couples
Scott Gries/NBC; Ron Batzdorff/NBC; FOX

Drama makes for great TV, and so it’s rare to have couples that don’t run into some sort of obstacle at one point in the course of their relationships. And when better to introduce just that than at the end of a season, leaving fans wondering if this is the beginning of the end of one of their favorite romances?

Such was the case with the 2020-2021 season, especially when taking into consideration some teases from executive producers about what’s next. A major secret on New Amsterdam may have kept a couple on the same coast but may also be what splits them up. On FBI: Most Wanted, a shooting, no matter who the victim, may be the beginning of the end of a new relationship.

Meanwhile, a flashforward on This Is Us revealed a new couple, Station 19 spouses were not feeling the love at a wedding, and a drastic move on A Million Little Things may wreck a relationship. Scroll down for these and more pairings we expect to face some trouble in the 2021-2022 season. (While This Is Us is returning in the midseason, the rest will be back in the fall.)

911 Season 4 Chimney Maddie Kenneth Choi Jennifer Love Hewitt
FOX

Maddie and Chimney, 9-1-1

“I would definitely buckle up,” showrunner Tim Minear warned TV Insider about how the couple will handle Maddie’s (Jennifer Love Hewitt) postpartum depression in Season 5. This past finale ended with Maddie quitting her job at the 9-1-1 call center and admitting to her boyfriend, firefighter Howie “Chimney” Han (Kenneth Choi) that she’s been struggling since giving birth to their daughter.

A Million Little Things Season 3 Gary Darcy James Roday Rodriguez
ABC/Jack Rowand

Gary and Darcy, A Million Little Things

Darcy (Floriana Lima) realized that she may, in fact, want more kids if Gary’s (James Roday Rodriguez) is going to be the father … just as he took Peter (Andrew Leeds), Sophie’s (Lizzy Greene) music teacher who assaulted her, hostage in his own home. “What we’re going to be watching next year is how Gary’s relationships with both [Darcy and Maggie] are affected by whatever he did at Peter’s and by whoever may find out about it,” creator DJ Nash said. After all, even if Gary and Darcy can get past what happens with Peter and her possibly moving (due to her ex’s job since they share custody of a son), those aren’t the only obstacles in their way. It seems inevitable that Gary and his ex Maggie (Allison Miller) will get back together at some point.

Upton & Halstead, Chicago P.D.

Yes, Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) may have proposed to her boyfriend and partner Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) at the end of the Season 8 finale, but she also hasn’t shared the crazy events that took place as Intelligence searched for one of their own, Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati), and Upton found Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) with a suspect. (After she talked Voight into bringing the man in, her boss may or may not have set her up to have to take a fatal shot.) We’re waiting to see how telling him might affect his answer.

FBI: Most Wanted - Season 2 - Jen Landon as Sarah Allen and Julian McMahon as Supervisory Special Agent Jess LaCroix

Jess & Sarah, FBI: Most Wanted

We have no idea who might have been shot or who pulled the trigger in the Season 2 finale — FBI Special Agents Jess LaCroix (Julian McMahon) and Kenny Crosby (Kellan Lutz), Jess’ girlfriend Sarah (Jen Landon), and her ex-husband Hugh (James Carpinello) were all armed — but something tells us whatever happened is going to change their lives too much. We had a feeling the moment Hugh stepped on Jess’ property that it was the beginning of the end of this relationship.

New Amsterdam Season 3 Leyla Bloom Shiva Kalaiselvan Janet Montgomery
Scott Gries/NBC

Bloom & Leyla, New Amsterdam

The good news is Leyla (Shiva Kalaiselvan) has a residency spot at New Amsterdam. The bad news is she’s in the dark about what her girlfriend, Dr. Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery), likely did so she would. (The last time there was an open spot, it was because of a bribe.) “How does a secret like that eat away at the foundation of a relationship and a love affair? It’s a little like having an affair. Once you have a secret in a relationship with somebody, it’s not benign, it eats away, it lives, it impacts things,” executive producer and director Peter Horton said. “It’s full of potential conflict and pending disasters because of the decisions that she’s made.”

Station 19 - Season 4 - Jaina Lee Ortiz and Boris Kodjoe - Andy and Sullivan
ABC/Ron Batzdorff

Andy & Sullivan, Station 19

Will the firefighters ever feel like they’re not one conversation away from a divorce? The latest problem came in the Season 4 finale, with Andy (Jaina Lee Ortiz) finding out that Sullivan (Boris Kodjoe) put himself forward to take over as captain from Maya (Danielle Savre) after she disobeyed the orders of the incident commander at a scene. While Maya was in a happy bubble with her wife Carina (Stefania Spampinato) on their wedding day, the rest of Station 19 learned she’d been relieved of her duties. Can Andy and Sullivan come back from what he did to her best friend?

Chrissy Metz as Kate, Chris Sullivan as Toby in This Is Us - Season 5 - 'The Adirondacks'
Ron Batzdorff/NBC

Kate & Toby, This Is Us

The writing is on the wall for Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby’s (Chris Sullivan) split in the present with his new job in San Francisco before a flash-forward took us to the day of her wedding … to her coworker Phillip (Chris Geere). That shocker was “part of our plan all along,” showrunner Dan Fogelman said. We can’t completely rule out Kate and Toby getting back together due to the multiple timelines and since it’s the final season, but their future sure is looking bleak.
