‘Wild Cards’ Season 2 Trailer Shows Martin Sheen as Conman, Plus What’s Next for Max & Ellis (VIDEO)

Get ready for more of the push and pull and crimes that you love on Wild Cards when Season 2 premieres on Wednesday, February 5, on The CW. TV Insider has your exclusive first look at the new season.

Wild Cards follows a by-the-book cop (Giacomo Gianniotti‘s Detective Cole Ellis) and a spirited, clever con woman (Vanessa Morgan‘s Max Mitchell) who work together to solve crimes. In the Season 1 finale, Max, after pulling an elaborate con worth millions, risked it all to tell Ellis she knew who killed his brother, betraying him and breaking his heart. In Season 2, they’re resigned to work together, and the stakes are raised in the cases they solve, the search for a killer, and their feelings for each other.

The series also stars Jason Priestley, Michael Xavier, Amy Goodmurphy, Terry Chen, Fletcher Donovan, and Jonesy as Marc the Cat. Guest stars include Martin Sheen (recurring throughout the season as Joseph Edwards, known as the greatest conman of all time), Ally Sheedy (as tough, non-nonsense ranch owner Rose Pruett), Marie Avgeropoulos (as street-racing expert and fiercely protective mother Nadia Evans), Katie Findlay (as Max’s sassy best friend and former partner-in-crime Maddy), and Tony D’Angelo (as formidable and commanding criminal mastermind Jaws).

The trailer, which you can watch above, offers a look at all of that and more as Ellis and Max together again.

“When we pick up Season 2, Ellis is pretty disappointed in Max. They worked hard to build trust with each other in Season 1, but after the cliffhanger finale, he feels betrayed and they have to start from scratch,” notes Morgan. “The chemistry between Max and Ellis definitely continues to heat up in the second season. The sparks are undeniable. But it’s not gonna be easy — they have a lot of ground to make up, and for Ellis, who has lost so much, giving his heart to someone else is hard.”

Gianniotti calls their dynamic in Season 2 “complicated,” adding that after Max broke Ellis’ trust, “he has a hard time coming back from that. There’s chemistry there but I think the two of them are just trying to figure themselves out, so I’m not sure they are ready for each other.”

Also coming up in Season 2 are “lots of guest stars and fun cases where you see the two of us pretending to be people we are not, to blend in. There’s a Fast & Furious type case, a Yellowstone meets Succession type case,” Gianniotti teases. “There’s a lot of fun homages to classic films and TV shows that will make it fun for the audience.”

He credits Morgan with making the show worth watching — and for coming back to work five weeks after giving birth. “I had to navigate a lack of sleep for almost the entire span of production, but was fortunate enough to have help and the show did a wonderful job to help and support me as much as they could,” shares Morgan.
