‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ Season 2 First Look: New Characters & Music (PHOTOS)

Season 2 of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist is almost here — the NBC musical comedy returns in the new year on Tuesday, January 5 — and NBC has unveiled several first-look photos featuring the returning cast alongside a new face.
While Season 1 followed Zoey’s (Jane Levy) story, beginning with a freak occurrence when an earthquake strikes during a routine MRI and leaves her with an ability to hear people’s inner thoughts and feelings through song, Season 2 focuses on her life after father Mitch’s (Peter Gallagher) death.
Still gifted with her mysterious power, Zoey and her family, including mother Maggie (Mary Steenburgen), brother David (Andrew Leeds), and sister-in-law Emily (Alice Lee) have to adjust to their new normal. And while Zoey’s grapples with her grief, she also faces some interesting dynamics between her love life and work, creating a perfect storm for more musical moments.
Along with the Clarkes, expect the return of Zoey’s beau, Max (Skylar Astin), bestie Mo (Alex Newell), former potential flame Simon (John Clarence Stewart), and coworkers Leif (Michael Thomas Grant) and Tobin (Kapil Talwalkar). And make way for Zoey’s new face: Harvey Guillen (What We Do in the Shadows), who will portray a SPRQ Point employee named George.

Zoey’s (Jane Levy) bestie Mo (Alex Newell) continues to be a voice of reason as she navigates life without her father
The Clarke family unit made up of Maggie (Mary Steenburgen), David (Andrew Leeds), Zoey, and Emily (Alice Lee) remains intact following the loss of their patriarch. And it seems that David and Emily’s bundle of joy has finally arrived.
Maggie seemingly remains a pillar of strength.
Although it seemed as if Zoey had decided to pursue a romance with her best guy friend Max (Skylar Astin), Simon (John Clarence Stewart) isn’t giving up.
Zoey’s still working at SPRQ Point, where she’ll no doubt face new workplace challenges.

Between Netflix’s star-studded The Prom with Meryl Streep and James Corden, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist on NBC and Disney+’s impossibly named but easy to love High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, we can’t stop singing the praises of TV’s current crop of song-filled smashes. Brava, all around.
One person Zoey could learn a lot about is newcomer George (played by What We Do in the Shadows‘ Harvey Guillen). Either way, expect plenty of song and dance.
