Best-known for playing Bill Paxton's son Ben on "Big Love" (HBO, 2006-2011), actor Douglas Smith also enjoyed leading big-screen roles in "Citizen Duane" (2006), "Treading Water" (2013), and "The Bye Bye Man" (2017).

Born in Toronto, Ontario in 1985, Smith made his acting debut in a 1996 episode of "The X-Files" (Fox, 1993-2002; 2016- ) before appearing in TV movie "Death Game" (1997) and playing a young Brendan Fraser in the romantic comedy "Blast From the Past" (1999).cFollowing a bit-part in the body swap sci-fi "Trancers 6" (2002), Smith starred as a teen who helps an ex-cop framed for murder in "Partners in Action" (2002) and landed the lead role of Reilly Evans, an American teen attempting to adapt to Australian high school life, in the first season of "Out There" (CTW, 2003-04).

Smith then appeared in paranormal horror "Hangman's Crime" (2003), teen movie "Sleepover" (2004) and coming-of-age "Rock the Party" (2005), and took top billing as hero Nicolas in festive horror "Santa's Slay" (2005), the titular mayoral candidate in indie comedy "Citizen Duane" (2006), and suicidal teen Scott in the found-footage "State's Evidence" (2006).

Smith's mainstream profile received a boost when he was cast as Ben Henrickson, the son of Bill Paxton's central polygamist, in the acclaimed drama "Big Love" (HBO, 2006-2011).

Following his five-year spell on the show, Smith played clinic client Edward in Brandon Cronenberg's darkly satirical directorial debut "Antiviral" (2012), the titular hero's cyclops half-brother Tyson in "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters" (2013), and pungent museum guide Mica in the quirky rom-com "Treading Water" (2013). Smith then appeared as another unlikely love interest in "Hard Drive" (2013) before returning to the horror genre for key roles in "Stage Fright" (2014) and "Ouija" (2014).

After briefly showing up as a medical worker in "Terminator: Genisys" (2015), Smith starred as a wrongly-convicted drug dealer in "Evan's Crime" (2015), guested as naïve keyboardist Gary in Martin Scorsese's rock & roll drama "Vinyl" (HBO, 2016), and played young lobbyist Alex in the political thriller "Miss Sloane" (2016).

Smith then enjoyed box-office success as the star of the low-budget supernatural horror "The Bye Bye Man" (2017), landed a small role on the LGBT rights docudrama "When We Rise" (ABC, 2017), and starred opposite Jena Malone in the small-town mystery "Bottom of the World" (2017).

Smith was then cast as Detective Sergeant Marcus Isaacson in the adaptation of Caleb Carr's late 19th Century-set crime novel, "The Alienist" (TNT, 2018-).
