Musician Joel Madden was born on March 11, 1979, in Waldorf, Maryland along with his identical twin brother Benji Madden. Together, with high school friends Billy Martin, Aaron Escolopio, and Paul Thomas they formed the band Good Charlotte in 1996. The band's self-titled debut album was well received in 2000 but the sophomore album, "The Young and the Hopeless" (2002) proved to be their breakout success. With singles like "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous" and "The Anthem", the album would go on to be certified three times platinum. Good Charlotte's third, darker album "The Chronicles of Life and Death" (2004) was successful in its own right, debuting at number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart.

In addition to being the lead singer for Good Charlotte, Madden added acting and hosting to his resume. At first he appeared as a cameo in movies like "Not Another Teen Movie" (2001) and "Material Girls" (2006). Then, in 2011, he became one of the vocal coaches for the Australian edition of "The Voice" (Nine Network, 2012- ). He stayed in that role for five seasons, moving to Sydney in the process. Following his popular run on "The Voice", Joel Madden replaced Dave Navarro as the host of the tattoo reality competition "Ink Master" (Spike, 2012- ) in 2022.
